Overview:
Kirby Inland Marine's Maritime Officer of Towing Vessel (MOTV) Program offers an opportunity for Maritime Academy Graduates, to be hired as a Steersman and learn the necessary skills to become a Pilot on a towing vessel.
The MOTV Steersman will be working under the direct supervision of the Captain or Relief Captain.
This hands on program will provide the boat handling skills required to safely navigate the boat and barges.
They will be learning the various geographic waterways in which Kirby Operates.
The MOTV Steersman will be working on various vessels throughout the program.
The program is a 18-24 months in duration.
The schedules within the program will vary based upon vessel, but are generally 28/14.
Upon completion of the program, The MOTV Steersman will be promoted to a watch standing Pilot aboard a Kirby towing vessel.
Responsibilities:
Learning to perform same duties the duties of a PilotNavigate tows on Inland Waterways and Western Rivers.
Ensure safety of boat and crew.
Monitor cargo transfer during critical times when necessary.
Liaison between vessel and dock personnel.
Purchasing authority for boat maintenance items and groceries.
Ensure policies and procedures are followed by vessel crew.
Assist Captain in carrying out his duties.
Follow Company procedures.
Serve as Safety Officer as required.
Participate and conduct drills and audits as needed.
Ensure engine room maintenance is kept up on a daily basisResponsible for keeping up with daily logs while on watch.
Qualifications:
EDUCATIONMust have graduated from an approved Maritime AcademyWORK CONDITIONSMust be able live and work in close quarters and able to spend a length of time away from family.
Work schedule and hours determined by boat.
Typical work schedule is a 2 for 1 schedule up to 30 days, with a 12 hour work shift including holidays.
Must be able to work in inclement weather outdoor, heat and cold.
Must be willing and able to attend paid required training on and off scheduled work time.
Must have reliable transportation and be able to drive to/from company defined hub cities.
